It almost seems like when they were casting “Scream 4,” they stole from the credits for the Joel Schumacher-directed gritty drug drama “Twelve.” Three of the film’s castmates, Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin and Nico Tortorella will all have roles in the upcoming sequel in the “Scream” franchise. While Roberts couldn’t make it to the premiere due to her “Scream 4″ shooting schedule, MTV News did get some dish from Culkin and Tortorella.

“We’re still shooting it. Not really allowed to talk about it. I signed a contract, seriously. I can’t say anything and I’d hate to get sued,” Culkin told MTV News at the New York City premiere of “Twelve.” “I better keep quiet on this!”

“I was [a fan of the original]. I was the ghost-faced killer for Halloween in the third or fourth grade,” he added. “Am I the killer this time around? … I am under contract.”

While Culkin decided to keep mum, his “Twelve” and “Scream 4″ co-star dished a bit more, revealing that he and Roberts may get busy. “My name is Trevor, and Emma and I have a love interest throughout the whole movie, and I can’t really give you too much more,” Tortorella said, adding that being on-set with some of the original cast is very exciting. “I can’t give you any information past that.”

“Yeah, Courteney’s there, Neve’s there, David’s there. You know, it’s really like walking into a family, and they’re just all accepting us with mad open arms,” he explained. “They’re all incredible people. It’s been quite the trip. I had never seen the originals until after I auditioned for the first time. … After watching them all, yeah, it’s one of its own.”

Other key players in the star-studded cast include Hayden Panettiere, who recently shared some details about the movie, Adam Brody, Anthony Anderson and Marley Shelton.

“Scream 4″ is scheduled to open April 15, 2011.

In this age of “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” mega-success, Hollywood has taken a keen interest in the young adult literary world in search of the next big thing. One of the likeliest contenders out there is “I Am Number Four,” a book that arrives in stores on August 3 and is credited to a writer with the distinctly alien name Pittacus Lore. The story follows a group of human-looking aliens who take refuge on Earth after their home planet of Lorien is destroyed by a marauding race of invaders known as Mogadorians.

DreamWorks picked up the rights to the book, the first in a planned series of six, last summer. “Eagle Eye” and “Disturbia” director D.J. Caruso signed on to helm it several months later. Then the cast started to come together, including relative newcomer Alex Pettyfer as the titular Number Four, Timothy Olyphant as the boy’s guardian, Teresa Palmer as fellow alien refugee Number Six and “Glee” star Dianna Agron as high school sweetheart Sarah.

The cast and crew are now assembled to shoot in Pittsburgh, with a February 2011 release planned for the film. Caruso was deep in the process of staging one of the story’s climactic scenes when he took some time out of his busy schedule Tuesday for an exclusive chat with MTV about how “Number Four” will appeal to audiences who have spent the past decade steeped in the lore of “Potter” and “Twilight.”

“['I Am Number Four' has] this intergalactic romance, but it’s still a very universal love story,” Caruso said. “And at the same time when you see this fighting and these Mogadorian blasters and people on cables and people transporting … there are these bizarre and cool sci-fi elements that have a real sort of ‘Kick-Ass’ quality.”

It is for this reason that the director sees his film, as well as the book, as having very broad appeal. The science fiction, the action, the PG-13 rating will bring in the young boys, but the high school love story, along with a pair of strong — and very different — female characters ought to appeal to young girls.

First there’s Teresa Palmer, “who’s this hot, sexy chick on her Ducati [motorcycle] who can fight with swords and kill f—in’ aliens,” Caruso said. “And at the same time you have Dianna, who … totally against what she does on ‘Glee,’ is playing this sweet all-American girl who’s a photographer in a small Midwestern town.”

At the center of the story is Pettyfer, a relatively untested young actor who would have next been seen in the “Beauty and the Beast”-inspired drama “Beastly” until a scheduling change pushed that one’s release out after “Number Four.”

“I’d be lying to you if I didn’t tell you I was more excited that we were coming out first,” Caruso admitted. “The thing I like about Alex is that, first of all, he’s this really dynamic, interesting, good-looking kid. But the most important element for me is that there’s this real vulnerability. It’s rare; you can see that, though there’s a confidence there, there’s a little bit of a pain that we can [relate to].

“I think that’s important in a hero,” Caruso continued. “There’s a real sort of melancholy sad side to him and to the character; it really is someone who just wants to hunker down. I think Alex really portrayed that — he’s very, very compelling in the part.” Caruso compares the actor to old-school action star Steve McQueen. “There’s a real kind of hip coolness and at the same time … [he's got that] vulnerability.”

Tying all of these characters together is a gripping story that is equal parts personal discovery and spectacle-driven action. “We’re trying to do a lot of things as practical and physical as we can,” Caruso said of the movie’s special effects, though he admits that there will of course be some digitally created elements as well.

“You ultimately have [these massive creatures] that we’re working with [visual-effects company] ILM on,” he said. “The older I get, the more I learn, you have to combine all of these elements, you can’t be going all digital. We’re not a big-budget movie, so we’re lacking some of the big toys that some of the other movies have, but we’re trying to make up for that with a lot of flair.”

“Twilight Saga: New Moon” actor Edi Gathegi has found his next role in another fanatically loved franchise. Gathegi will play Darwin in the upcoming “X-Men: First Class,” Deadline Hollywood reports.

Darwin is the first biracial mutant in the comic series, and he has the power of “reactive evolution,” meaning that his body can adapt to any situation. For instance, his skin can become flame retardant in a fire, he can grow gills when submerged in water or he can see in the dark.

“First Class” is to center on the early years of the mutants made famous by the Marvel comic series. James McAvoy will star as a young Charles Xavier, better known by his superhero name, Professor X. “Kick-Ass” director Matthew Vaughn is to helm the film, which has been given a June 3, 2011, release date. Production is expected to begin this summer, with “X-Men” and “X2: X-Men United” director Bryan Singer producing, alongside Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.

But “First Class” won’t reunite Gathegi with “Twilight” co-star Taylor Lautner, despite earlier rumors. Lautner, who was said to be in talks to play a young Wolverine, was attached to the project for quite some time, but later decided to pass.

And it’s not just “Twilight” junkies who are sad that Lautner’s out. “I wanted Taylor to do it, I really did,” Singer said. “He’s doing a movie in Pittsburgh called ‘Abduction,’ and then he’s got the next ‘Twilight’ movie. We talked about it a lot, he is a friend, and I really wanted to make it work. It just doesn’t look like it’s possible to do it.”

Singer did, however, confirm some other big names for the film. “Kevin Bacon I do believe is going to happen,” he said, noting that he’d likely become the central villain. “James McAvoy is definitely cast as a young Charles Xavier, Mike Fassbender is in the movie, Nick Hoult. Those are for sure.”

Our (Early) Oscar Watch: Annette, Angie & Inception!

Sure, the Oscars aren’t until February, but that doesn’t mean we can’t already start talking about who’s caught our Academy eye. Especially since, as Entertainment Weekly points out, Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker had already come out by this time last year.
That’s why we’re so excited to kick off our Awful talk of all things Oscars, wherein we assert our predictions that—let’s face it—are so gonna come true over the course of the year.
And while none of the Twilight cast may get their little gold statue this year (with more of their prestigious projects hitting the big screen in 2011), we’ve got some picks of who might be nommed for the top honors:

Annette Bening for Best Actress
Just like Sandra Bullock finally started to get recognized for her acting last year, darling Annette has been around forever, but hasn’t exactly been showered with award season graces. Sure, she has two nominations under her belt but lost the race for both Being Julia and American Beauty to that award-robbing, husband-eschewing Hilary Swank.
But alas, this year things are gonna change. Annette was a powerhouse in The Kids Are Alright, and gave a performance that had better get noticed by the Academy. She’s plays a fiercely age-proud lesbian mama doc and, well, it’s totally award-worthy stuff. And she delivers it all just like Streep: little make-up, tons of knowing.
Annette’s one of those rare women of a certain age who doesn’t obsessively tinker with herself over the years. She’s not trying to hide her years or look like every other Botox-lookin’ broad out there. There’s got to an award for that.
Inception for Best Picture
Yes, we hear everyone absolutely raving about Black Swan (and for good reason, mind you) but we’re pretty confident Christopher Nolan’s latest flick has the kick to make it to the final ten—especially seeing as those top ten spots are looking pretty empty (unless, of course, Toy Story 3 snatches the Up spot from last year, which our tearful nostalgia would not mind the least).
But now that the Oscars seem to be nominating big budget flicks that actually do well at the box office, we think Inception deserves to be put on a pedestal. Hey, if Avatar could grab a nom then Inception sure as hell can—at least the Freudian-frenzy of a film was actually, uh, original.
Plus, we’re pretty sure the film could nab some other nominations—Best Director (duh, we were practically drooling watching this film), Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (the Academy hearts Leo as much as we do!), and possibly even some Best Supporting nods (Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and especially Marion Cotillard were great if not criminally underused)—so why not just give it a chance at the night’s top honor as well?
Angelina Jolie for The Long Shot
OK, before you laugh at us for even thinking the Academy would consider Salt, we said it was a long shot. That said, the Oscars do love to honor its favorite leading ladies—and with one win and another nom—Angelina is an Academy baby. Just see Meryl Streep in Julie & Julia. Meryl shined, while the film on the whole was…ho hum, at least in our opinion.
That’s exactly what Ange does in Salt.
We liked the flick enough—it was definitely entertaining—seeing Angie kick ass and get herself out of one absolutely ridiculous situation after another without a scratch (remember, this action pic was written for Tom Cruise after all), but we were way more impressed by Angelina’s performance.
Who needs testosterone when Angie’s lips and fists can do the job so much efficiently, and with the bloodiest damn sex appeal around?
But, like we said, long shot.

‘Twilight’ And ‘Priest’ Only Have Vampires In Common, Cam Gigandet Says

SAN DIEGO — Ever since he lit up the screen as delightfully devious “Twilight” villain James, Cam Gigandet’s career has been on the rise. When MTV News caught up with him during Comic-Con on Friday (July 23), we asked about his character in the upcoming “Priest” — which is based on the celebrated comic book series — and, since the film coincidentally involves vampires, if he had any hesitation in taking on the part.

“I play Sheriff Hicks,” he said. “I’m the sheriff of a small town where my girlfriend gets kidnapped by this pack of vampires, so I enlist Paul Bettany’s, Priest’s, help, and we are on the road to find and rescue her.”

Gigandet said that, although there are vampires involved in the movie, fans expecting the romantic “Twilight”-style vamps will be in for a shock.

“It’s very, very different from ‘Twilight,’ ” he said. “The similarities kind of end with what they’re called, which is vampires.”

Gigandet said the world of “Priest,” directed by Scott Charles Stewart, is also entirely different. “The world Scott created is kind of unlike any other,” he said. “Sometimes it was hard to visualize what he had in his mind, but I’ve seen clips, and its unbelievable. … Just to work with all of these people, they’re such an amazing cast. I didn’t have any doubts [about taking on another vampire-related role].”

Gigandet’s co-star, “Star Trek” star Karl Urban, said he’s never seen a movie like this. “This is a post-apocalyptic vampire western,” he said. “The emphasis isn’t heavily on the fact — it’s not like a ‘vampire film’; there’s so much more to it.”

As far as what “Twilight” fans can expect to see, and fans of the original comic book, Gigandet and his co-stars said there is something for everyone in the film, because it is emotional and character-driven.

“[There are] so many different levels, and so many people are doing things that sacrifice for all sorts of love,” Gigandet said. “It’s not just one set love story. There are so many different levels going on.”

“Priest” is set to open in May 2011.

Zac Efron, ‘Charlie St. Cloud’ Cast Recall Ghostly Encounters

Zac Efron’s new drama, “Charlie St. Cloud,” is all about ghosts. It revolves around Charlie (Efron), who works at a cemetery to be close to his dead younger brother, Sam (Charlie Tahan). Eventually he must choose between being close to his brother’s ghost or pursuing love.

When MTV News caught up with Efron and the rest of the “St. Cloud” crew at the Los Angeles premiere of the film, which opens July 30, we wanted to know about their spookiest real-life ghost encounters.

“Nothing really, but I think everyone’s had those things they can’t necessarily explain at one point or another,” Efron said. “No, I don’t have any ghost stories for you.”

Co-star Donal Logue feels that at the very core of life there is a spiritual something. “Every minute of every day is like from [protozoal] soup, man. How did this happen?” he explained. “You know what I’m saying?”

Spirituality seemed to be the theme among the cast and guests at the premiere. Stephen Baldwin explained his take on ghosts, saying, “I have real-life spiritual encounters every day, but not with ghosts: with the Holy Ghost.”

Similarly, Amanda Crew added, “You know, I’ve never seen any ghost, but I definitely believe that there’s some sort of something spiritual out there. I mean, there has to be. There’s been too many times in my life that should have gone another way that there’s someone looking out for me.”

Director Burr Steers admitted that there are otherworldly beings that keep him up at night. “In the middle of the night, when you hear things clanging around, I’m a coward and imagine that there are things at work,” he said. “But here, on the red carpet, no.”

Matt Ward shared one of his ghostly encounters. “This acting community that I live in, we actually used to be in this building, and there was a ghost in there,” he recalled. “It was weird. You would just be sitting in a room and you would see this little skitter by and that’s probably one of the only experiences that I’ve had other than [when] I used to mess with my friends a lot when I was younger. I would always pretend to be possessed right after we’d watch a scary movie.”

That seems like nothing compared to one very spooky moment Augustus Prew once had. “I was doing this job in Manchester and I was staying in this hotel that used to be an old Victorian mill,” he recalled. “About two o’clock in the morning I woke up and it was really cold in the room, And there was this little kid at the end of my bed. It was really weird and it scared the life out of me and then he disappeared.”

Muse Bassist Compares Being On ‘Twilight’ Soundtracks To Selling Soul

After making millions of potential new fans thanks to the inclusion of their songs on all three “Twilight” soundtrack albums, Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme may be risking the bloodthirsty wrath of the Twi-Hard Nation with some comments he recently made about the vampire sensation.

“I’m not sure how cool it is to be on those kind of things, but sometimes you’ve just got to get your music out there in different ways,” the told BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat column.

Even with the films’ box-office success and the massive exposure for the band, which is stadium-rocking huge in Europe but has not yet broken through in the same way in the U.S., Wolstenholme said he’s not sure the trade-off has been worth it. “It’s very difficult in America, because you don’t have anything like Radio 1, nothing is national,” he said. “You have to take every opportunity you get over there, and sometimes you have to sell your soul.”

The group’s “Supermassive Black Hole” was the lead track on the original “Twilight” soundtrack — and it played a pivotal role in the key baseball scene in the film — while “I Belong to You (New Moon Remix)” appeared on the “New Moon” disc, and “Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)” is on the “Eclipse” album.

“Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer is an avowed fan of the drama-loving band and has said that their music inspired her writing, but Wolstenholme appeared ambivalent about how the music has been used in the films. He said he watched the original movie and “quite enjoyed it,” even if it wasn’t his “cup of tea,” but he has not seen the two sequels.

When it came time to place “Neutron Star Collision” in “Eclipse,” there appears to have been some confusion over where it would fit in that added to his uneasiness about participating in the project.

“When we were in the studio writing it, one minute they said they wanted to use it in the end credits, then they said they wanted to use it in another scene,” he said. “Then it was another scene, and in the end, we were like, ‘Do what you want with it, we don’t care any more.’ ”

The comments were a bit of a turnabout from ones drummer Dominic Howard made in October, when he said the band was flattered to be the only group to appear on the first two “Twilight” soundtracks.

“It might be something to do with Stephenie Meyer and that she loves us,” Howard told MTV News. “We met her quite awhile ago in Phoenix — it was before ‘Twilight’ came out. She’s a very nice lady and talked about how she listens to our music as she writes her books. This is all way before it turned into this huge success that it is, before everyone went vampire nuts.”

At the time, Howard said that inclusion in the “Twilight” franchise had helped Muse reach out to “whole loads of new people that haven’t heard us before. … It’s a nice side project to be involved in.”

After pushing back, rearranging and canceling a pair of North American dates due to the impending birth of Wolstenholme’s fifth child, Muse are slated to be back on the road in the U.S. for a September 22 show in San Diego. And the bassist said things are finally breaking through for them stateside.

“It’s going great over there,” he said. “Early this year, we started playing in arenas, so it was great to finally take over the full production that we toured with in Europe. … For a long time, America fell by the wayside and nothing was really happening at all, and we were having problems with our record company over there.”

But with a full slate of dates through the end of the year, don’t expect a follow-up to last year’s Resistance any time soon. “The touring schedules are so crazy that just the thought of another album is just not even there at the moment,” he said. “I’m sure [singer] Matt [Bellamy] has plenty of ideas, but physically trying to get together and work on stuff is just not possible on tour. … The few days off we do have, we like to go home or go somewhere and chill out. With the six-day, holiday-weekend domestic box-office gross of “Eclipse” on the books — officially $176.4 million — the numbers conversation of the moment turned to one tricky question: Would the latest installment of the “Twilight” franchise ultimately defeat “New Moon” and its $296.6 million haul last year?

Inside the halls of Summit Entertainment, executives are confident that “Eclipse” — though it fell just short of the six-day total of “New Moon” — will eventually rank as the top-grossing “Twilight” film. At least, that is, until the first part of “Breaking Dawn” drops in November 2011.

“I think we have a real good shot at it after this first week,” Summit’s distribution head Richie Fay told MTV News. “We’re not disappointed in this gross at all. It’s where we expected to be, and it hopefully gets us north of ‘New Moon.’ ”

Potentially helping Summit get there is the idea that a summer release date, at a time when schools are no longer trapping Twilighters in math class, will increase weekday grosses. But it’s not entirely clear that such a tactic is working out. “Eclipse” grossed over $10 million this Tuesday, according to Fay, which is roughly what “New Moon,” which opened on a Friday, took in on the Monday after its opening weekend.

Of course, conclusions cannot be drawn after just one day, and exact comparisons are difficult to make in general, owing to the different seasons and days of each film’s release. After seven days, “New Moon” and “Eclipse” are roughly equal in terms of total box-office sales.

The key will be to see how “Eclipse” fares in the next few days and how it performs in its second weekend. “New Moon” was a notoriously frontloaded release — earning 48 percent of its total gross on its opening weekend — and dropped 70 percent during its second weekend. If “Eclipse” can bump sales this week and avoid a precipitous second-weekend drop, the film will be well on its way to topping “New Moon.”

Yet at Summit, the focus is not so much on a race to first place as it is on a continued dedication to serving a fervid fanbase. “If we lost the audience to some degree over the weekend to barbecues and fireworks, they will probably come back,” Fay said. “It’s kind of like a tsunami audience. As soon as they’ve finished viewing ‘New Moon’ in the theaters, then the DVD comes out, and right after that, ‘Eclipse’ comes out. We’re servicing that audience very nicely.”

New Moon Still Top Opening Day Movie!

New Moon is still the title holder for top grossing opening day movie of all time. While everyone thought Eclipse would beat out New Moon, New Moon is still the opening day winner and is currently beating Eclipse in revenue -

Yet that applause is surely tempered somewhat, as “Eclipse” failed to out-gross “New Moon,” its series predecessor, which opened last fall with $178.9 million in box-office receipts over six days. While there can be no exact comparisons between the initial performances of each film, since “New Moon” opened on Friday, all eyes are going to focus on the ultimate question: Will “Eclipse” defeat “New Moon” at the box office?

“It has a real shot at beating ‘New Moon,’ and that’s after ‘New Moon’ set the bar so high,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com‘s box office division. ” ‘Twilight’ fever is so intense that it burns bright at the front, and then it inevitably slows down. But the movie has good word of mouth, and it should hang in there.”

“New Moon” finished up its theatrical run with $296.6 million, and as Box Office Mojo points out, 48 percent of that total came on its opening weekend, making it the most front-loaded blockbuster ever. What that means is Twilighters hit theaters early — and, in many cases, often — and “New Moon” simply couldn’t sustain its audience enough to crack the upper echelon of all-time top grossing flicks (it dropped a staggering 70 percent in its second weekend). Similarly, fans came out in droves for “Eclipse,” and it remains to be seen if the film can avoid such a precipitous second-weekend fall.

I think that ultimately Eclipse should beat out New Moon when it comes to box office numbers. The reviews have been great, and I think over the next few weekends you’ll see more people going to see it in theaters!
